James E. Dickson papers, 1919-1944.

Consisting chiefly of monthly reports, 1922-1940, recorded by J.E. Dickson in his capacity as Negro Agricultural Extension Agent for Richland County, S.C., and his work with African American farmers, tenants or sharecroppers, and organizing Negro 4-H Clubs to educate the next generation of farmers. Monthly reports describe daily activities, demonstrations given, emergency calls answered, and participation in community meetings; annual reports, 1919-1939, providing narrative and statistical summary of Dickson's work; joint reports of cooperative extension work; and proposed annual programs for the years 1924, 1937-1938, and 1941. Undated surveys provide detailed information on farms, farmers, and resident families residing at White Rock, Fairwold, Blythewood, Eastover, and possibly another unidentified community; (each file records information on name of adults in each family, variety of livestock, whether the family received government assistance, etc.); recommendations to agents from Clemson University, 1939-1942, re possible demonstrations; and a small amount of personal correspondence. Includes a small number of photographs, as found in Annual Report for Richland County, 1929, with images of Dickson and S.C. farmers who had profited from increased production by following Extenstion demonstrations, including "Demonstration in corn...," with view of Dickson among crops with African American and white farmers and three white children; "...five acre cotton contestant, competing in the State-wide cotton contest," with Dickson and large group of African American men and boys in cotton field; "Poultry...," with Dickson and four African-American women all holding chickens, with large bucket of eggs in foreground and outbuilding in background; "4-H Club boy," with young man in cotton field, noting increase in yield thanks to Extension recommendations.
